MTD Q2 Checklist 2026: 7 Steps Before 7 November Deadline
This MTD Q2 checklist covers the second quarterly update for UK freelancers in Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. If you are in scope, check each item before you send the update. This checklist follows official HMRC guidance, updated 29 October 2026, and the site’s Making Tax Digital calculator. It is general information, not tax advice.
The next deadline is 7 November 2026. It is the deadline for the second quarterly update, not a tax payment deadline. Send the update before 7 November 2026 to keep your quarterly record complete.
What counts in Q2
- The second quarterly update reports cumulative income and expenses for the tax year to date, not only Q2 alone.
- Standard periods: 6 April to 5 October 2026.
- Calendar periods: 1 April to 30 September 2026.
- If you use MTD-compatible software, the update is normally sent from that software after you check the cumulative totals.
- Do not use the November deadline to file your self-assessment return. The return has a separate deadline.
- If your qualifying income is £50,000 or more, you are in scope for MTD for Income Tax from 6 April 2026. Check the threshold in the calculator before you assume you are out of scope, and run your own turnover through the calculator if you are near the line.
The 7 checks
Work through the list in order. Check each item, fix it, then send.
- Confirm you are in scope. Check the MTD for Income Tax rules for your qualifying income, your tax year, and any exemptions that apply to you.
- Confirm your period. Check whether you use standard periods or calendar periods, and that the Q2 period in your software matches that choice.
- Standard: 6 April to 5 October 2026.
- Calendar: 1 April to 30 September 2026.
- Reconcile cumulative totals. Check that the year-to-date income and expenses in the update include Q1 and Q2 together, not Q2 alone.
- Check every income stream. Include self-employment income and any property income in scope, with the right category for each item.
- Check every expense. Remove personal costs, capital items, and duplicates before you send.
- Check your software record. Confirm the update was sent from MTD-compatible software, and keep the confirmation for your records.
- If the software shows an error, fix the record and resend before 7 November 2026.
- Do not send a second update for the same period unless the software or HMRC tells you to correct it.
- Record the deadline. Add 7 November 2026 to your calendar, and note the next deadlines: 7 February 2027 for Q3 and 7 May 2027 for Q4.
Next deadlines
Q3: 7 February 2027. Q4: 7 May 2027. End of year statement and final declaration: 31 January 2028. Keep the same cumulative check for each quarter, and do not treat a quarterly update as a final return.
Penalty points: In 2026-27, quarterly updates do not earn penalty points. Do not rely on that in later years without checking the current HMRC rules.
