The History of Upwork’s Fee Change (Why It’s Now 10% Flat)
Prior to May 2023, Upwork used a lifetime billings sliding scale per client relationship: 20% on the first $500, 10% from $500.01 to $10,000, and 5% above $10,000. This rewarded long-term client relationships with lower fees over time.
In May 2023, Upwork retired this structure and switched to a flat 10% service fee across all contracts, regardless of contract size or relationship duration. The change benefited new freelancers (who previously paid 20%) but removed the incentive for long-term relationships that previously dropped to 5%. For high-billing, established relationships, this was effectively a fee increase.
In 2026, this flat 10% structure remains in place with no announced changes.

- Price per Connect: $0.15 (sold in bundles of 10, 20, 40, 60, 80)
- Free monthly allowance: 10 Connects/month (replenished automatically)
- Cost per proposal: approximately $0.90 for standard proposals
