Freelance Financial Runway Calculator: How Long Can You Survive Without New Work?
Your financial runway is the number of months you can survive without new income. Every freelancer should know this number — it determines how aggressively you need to prospect and how much risk you can take.
📋 Table of Contents

Runway = Cash Savings ÷ Monthly Burn Rate

Target: 3–6 months minimum runway; 12 months for agency owners or high-risk income situations

Monthly burn = essential living expenses + business expenses + tax reserve

Calculate your runway: Financial Runway Simulator

Most employed professionals have essentially zero runway — one missed paycheck and the bills stop getting paid. Freelancers have the opportunity to build meaningful financial runway that gives them freedom to be selective about clients, take time between projects, or make bold business pivots without panic. But building that runway requires understanding two numbers precisely: what you have, and how fast you’re burning it.

    The Runway Formula

Financial Runway = Total Liquid Savings ÷ Monthly Burn Rate

Where Monthly Burn Rate = all essential and semi-essential monthly outflows:

    Expense CategoryInclude?Notes
    Rent / MortgageYesFixed, non-negotiable
Food and groceriesYes (reduced)Survival budget: cook at home
Health insuranceYesEssential, ACA marketplace if US
Business tools (minimal)YesKeep only what you need to work
    Internet/phoneYesCannot work without it
Tax reserveYes (even in dry months)Do not raid your tax savings
Entertainment, dining outExclude (or minimal)Survival mode means cutting this

    Worked Example: Calculating Your Runway

Alex has $28,000 in liquid savings (in a high-yield savings account, not retirement accounts). Their survival monthly burn rate is:

    • Rent: $1,400
    • Food: $400
    • Health insurance: $350
    • Business tools: $200
    • Utilities + phone: $150
    • Tax reserve (set aside but not spent): $0 (already paid)
    • Total burn: $2,500/month

    Alex’s runway: $28,000 ÷ $2,500 = 11.2 months

That’s excellent runway. Alex can take on a challenging project that takes 2 months, wait for a dream client for 3 months, or use the security to raise their rates significantly without fear.

How to Build Your Runway Faster

    • Automate savings: On every invoice payment, auto-transfer 15–20% to a dedicated runway savings account before you spend anything else
    • Keep a survival budget mode: Know what your minimum monthly burn is and be ready to switch to it if needed
    • Don’t count tax savings as runway: That money is already committed to the government
    • Retainer revenue = longer runway: Each monthly retainer client reduces the number of months you need in reserves

Use the Financial Runway Simulator to calculate your current runway, model different savings scenarios, and find out exactly how many months of runway each additional retainer client provides.
